As sites like Digg, StumbleUpon, Facebook, Twitter, Plurk & MySpace infiltrate the internet - thousands of hours are wasted daily.
Thousands of teenagers flock to their computers to see who’s left them a new MySpace comment, and Tech Geeks & “newsphiles” across the globe spend countless hours using Digg & StumbleUpon to promote and bookmark the latest articles, videos, and images popping up on the internet.
Granted - it’s important to stay connected to friends, family, and news through online services, but when do we acknowledge that our online behaviors can be managed in a much more effective/efficient manner?
Internet users travel cyberspace at incredible speeds - and only a few seconds are permitted in grabbing a visitor’s attention.
When writing articles for any web endeavor - it’s best to focus on developing simplistic writing, while still generating meaty, useful pieces. Visitors don’t have time to analyze an article in order to pull out the pertinent information.
Using my irritating/useless title of “Curious Collection of Compound Conundrums“, as an example - think of websites that have been experienced in the past that only bring confusion and frustration to readers.
Titles not targeted towards an article’s content, annoying riddles, and inaccurate data - are all attributes of articles that only bring maddening, annoying experiences to website visitors/readers.
If you spend a decent amount of time using the internet – you’re bound to have come across image CAPTCHA’s, the challenge tests where you must type the words or text found in an image – into a form field. These have been used rather effectively over the past few years in helping to combat automated bot spamming.
The problem now? CAPTCHAs are beginning to effectively frustrate and keep genuine users away from online services – as the images, in some cases, are becoming increasingly difficult to decipher. Do you type all letters in capitals? Is there a space needed between words? Or, is that a zero or an O?
At what point do webmasters realize their CAPTCHA’s are too distorted? Would it be possible for webmasters to begin looking for other methods in helping to keep spammers away from forms?
I find myself more and more often using the audio versions of CAPTCHA’s, as in some cases its literally impossible to make out and decode the text in the image.
Saliva oozes from mouths, which hang slightly agape. Hazed over eyes stare lifeless into whirring “light” boxes. Backs unnaturally slump like old witches from children’s fairy tales. This is the scary description of how most of us look while working at the computer.
Humor aside – taking care of your body and engaging in proper posture, eating well, and participating in frequent breaks is of utmost importance when one spends long hours sitting at a desk, working with the computer.
Signs of improper computer usage are neck pain, burning sensations in the wrists, eye strain and tiredness, and many other symptoms which can ultimately impair computer usage and work – which creates a more stressful, uncomfortable work experience.
Amongst many things, the Smart Boy Designs blog is meant to be a fun, educational location for the connection of web development knowledge for all online users. I have an intense passion for the world of web development - and hopefully this engaging energy transfers seamlessly through my writing. Rest your weary fingers - and stay for a while. Above all - enjoy!
