Kim Peek’s Guide for Creating Endless Blog Content

by Christian Hollingsworth on January 26, 2012

in Blogging

Kim Peek was a famous savant in America.

Having the magnificent capability of remembering everything he ever read, he was literally a walking encyclopedia. Nearing the end of his life he could easily recall the information from any of the 10,000+ books he had read.

Due to his phenomenal abilities, the movie “Rain man” was even created based on his life.

I remember watching that movie for the first time and being utterly amazed at what the mind is capable of doing. It stores memories. That alone, is a miracle. The brain is able to store, assimilate and recall thoughts, words, smells, sights and more.

To me, the brain is fascinating.

If Kim Peek were still alive today, I believe the following might be some of the advice he’d give in regards to crafting endless blog content.

Christian, I don’t have anything to write about. Where can I get blog content ideas?

I’m asked this question over and over again.

For quite some time, I really didn’t have a specific answer. In my mind it was a foreign thought to think there wasn’t enough to write about. Isn’t endless blog content everywhere we look?

If you ever get a sneak peak of my blog’s dashboard you’ll see I have almost 300 draft posts. My Evernote is filled to the brim with hundreds upon hundreds of songs, notes, blog post ideas, thoughts, opinions, worries, inventions & beliefs. Anyone who knows me personally will notice I keep a spiral bound notebook with me almost everywhere I go. Journals litter bookshelves.

So, the question remains. Where do I find my endless supply of blog content?

Let me tell you.

Let’s get a list going. Let’s make it endless.

To paint a better story of where I find blog content, I thought it might help to give you a list of examples.

Visual examples through words are one of my favorite ways to understand abstract concepts.

  • Your blog niche is gardening. Let’s follow the example of Kim Peek and go read a book; the first place I’d check is the library. Once you get to the library find every book related to your niche. Bring those puppies home and read, read, read. Write notes. Think. Analyze. Without plagiarizing, use your new information and skills to compile more blog posts.
  • Sometimes when the sun is about to set, I’ll take a moment to find a spot where I can watch it. Thoughts and ideas usually flood to my mind during a setting like this. I never forget to have my notebook with me.
  • Remember that often, you won’t have the same spark of genius twice; so write everything down.
  • Read other blogs. You’d be amazed at how much you learn by becoming involved in your niche.
  • On the same front, be sure to comment on other blogs. When you post a blog comment, you’re helping your brain to remember what you’ve learned. As you ponder and process the blog post you’ll also have many more thoughts and ideas come to your mind.
  • Use Amazon. I love buying books and after I finish each one I write a book review blog post. Bam! Another piece of content.
  • Don’t forget to use your friends and family as a resource. Ask them to help write for you. Maybe you could create an interview with them that you’d feature on your blog? Ask them, “What’s it like living with a blogger? How do you feel about this hobby of mine?” The question possibilities are endless.
  • At the moment I’m taking some college courses. It’s a great way to refresh some of my web development skills, while also gathering an ample supply of notes upon which to draw blog content from. There are many blog niches, of which have a matching course to take at a local community college. For example, if you write about art – have you considered taking a class in a medium you’ve never worked with?
  • Be sure to have lots of desk toys. Every 25 minutes I try and take a few minute break. If you know me well, you know I have lots of desk toys. Squishy things, putty, NeoCube and more. Get your hands working with something and often the blog content will flow naturally.
  • It sounds a little counter-intuitive, but you’d be surprised how often blog post ideas come to me while watching TV. It happens. A lot. Just don’t make this your excuse the next time your husband or wife comments on how much TV you’re watching. “It’s okay, sweety, Christian told me it would be good for my blog project!
  • Browsing through the daily news pertaining to your blog’s niche is a great way to “spark” the mind with new blog content ideas.
  • Have patience. Some days you’ll have no ideas, while other days you’ll pump out ten posts. Just as the seas ebbs and flows, so are minds do too.
  • Hit up Google Images. Enter your niche as the search term and become inspired by the photos that pop up.

Now, here’s the “takeaway” secret that comes after you start using all these blog content ideas:

If you start compiling a list of draft posts, notes & thoughts – you’ll have the comfort in knowing you’ll never be without blog posts. Have the urge to publish a post? Pull up one of those drafts you’ve been saving, spend 15 minutes editing the content, and you have a great post in a jiffy!

Some Parting Thoughts

The brilliant part of putting these practices to work, is something I cannot teach through blog post.

You’ll learn. You’ll grow. You’ll think. You’ll write.

By continually searching for new blog content ideas, you’ll really start to see the endless pit.

There are ideas everywhere.

They’re contained within books, our hearts, thoughts, friends, family, television, theater, movies, poems, ballads, songs & the internet.

So get out there and start writing!

Where do you find blog content ideas? Do you believe the blog content “pit” is endless? If you’re struggling to come up with post ideas, share your concerns in the comments – and myself and others would be happy to give you some feedback and thoughts.

Some of my best ideas come as I go for a walk or do mindless household chores. There is also the unmentionable … sitting on the throne. As I was reading other similar articles—that was the number one place to acquire inspiration to write the next blog post.

Time to reread. I never have enough posts to write. Then I will go comment on other people’s posts—as mentioned here!

Christian,

very informative post. I feel that people should never run out of topics to write or post about because there is always something new to learn, and there are tons of information to teach out there.

the internet alone is full of resources to find things to teach about related to a niche.

Great post, and agree with your ideas! Being a newbie to blogging, I was worried about having enough ideas after my first couple of months. Well, that has not been the case! Many of these sugggestions: other blog sites, TV, random daily life, books, news reports, etc. have become “gold-mines” with content ideas for me. Example: Recently saw a remarkable dance number on the net..BAM..a blog about perceived limitations. It was there for the posting.
Speaking for myself, that’s not saying a bloggers content is always wonderful, or inspirational, or even rational for that matter; but, one of the things I have learned, it is subjective…to each his own…and you can always glean something good, or thought-provoking from it. And the people you “meet” ….whew! That’s a blog in and of it’s own.
BTW-misplaced my handy-dandy notebook….panic mode, big time! ;-)

Christian, fantastic post!

Watching TV (and admittedly, a lot of it) usually does wonders for coming up with blog post ideas. Sometimes the style of a commercial inspires me; sometimes it’s the program itself.

What I did recently was make a giant list of all the TV shows I watch. Then on another page of paper, I started listing every single thing I could possibly write about from those shows. I generated over fifty solid ideas, and some didn’t even relate to the TV shows by the end of the brainstorming session.

Even if you’re not a huge TV watcher, you can do this with you favorite movies, songs, plays, sports teams, whatever! It doesn’t matter if the idea is amazing or a touch lacking, just get it out there. :)

I think blog should be centered on the subject you are passionate about. You will definitely go down on steam in the initial stages so it is that passion that will drive you to move on. Thanks for a great post Smart boy!

Christian,

I especially like the idea of writing a review on Amazon after I finish a book. That could certainly be a blog post in itself.

I was thinking about writing my own post on Creating Endless Blog Content, but you covered just about everything!

Lately I’m getting hooked on podcasts. Podcasts about blogging (yes, blogging ;) ), comedy, writing, etc., so usually I have that light-bulb moment when I’m on the treadmill listening … reach for the iPhone with my sweaty mitt and try to enter the idea in Evernote before I fly off the treadmill.

Nice post. Thanks!

I particularly like the ‘have many desktoys’ suggestion. I think this DOES make a difference, it’s very easy to get dead eyes looking at a screen for hours on end, so changing it up a bit always gets the creative juices flowing

Christian, awesome post. I echo the notebook idea. I have a blackberry and jot notes all the time. Some good some not so good but always a ton of content potential. Whats good about it is that I just cut and paste it to.word and start editing away. Anyway, thanks for the awesome tips.

I’m a painter and I see a lot of similarities here. I never worry about staring at a blank canvas. Ideas flow immediately.
However, if I don’t put myself in the studio in front of a canvas, nothing has an opportunity to appear. Also, if my tools aren’t ready at hand – paints, brushes, painting knives – it is that much harder to decide what to paint. Too much time is spent getting ready.
I see to blog effectively I need all my tools at the ready. WordPress. iPad. Notes.
And, I need to be willing to paint (write) over what I’ve done if I am not satisfied. To try new approaches.

I guess the best way to get endless content is to communicate with other people as often as possible. In this way, you could get enough idea from them.

An idea that has produced great results for me is to create an editorial calendar – 12 months of predetermined general categories. When I get an idea, I place it on the schedule in the appropriate category. When the new month comes, I have a lot of ideas waiting for me.

Christian,
I think my most important tool is my spiral notebook. It has a cute little own on it’s cover so i feel so inspired when i write in it. But you are right, we never know when the moment arises and you have some idea that you need to write down right away.

An additional source for content is google keyword search. I type in some word in my niche and see what comes up.

I also look at the contents of amazon books in my niche. I just read the table of contents to get ideas and i always come away with over a dozen.

Recently i watched a video on Adriennes blog. Paul did a guest post on video and he suggested going to Youtube and searching for videos in your niche to find ideas. I thought nothing of it until i want there and literally had 2 pages of ideas in less than 30 minutes.

Christian,

Agree with most of your suggestions.

My big two are;

#1 Read books & read what other people write
#2 Hour long walks around sunset. Like you said sunset magically inspires me for some reason.

When all else fails — Some red wine + classical music and something toys to play with in my hands. Dunno, fiddling and not focusing works wonders.

Hi, Chris! You’ve discussed a sensible topic among old bloggers/writers. I have a question, though. You said: “Read other blogs.” When getting inspired from other blogs, we should mention that in our articles or it’s OK if not since we wrote unique content anyway?

If you’re quoted content, then you should certainly give credit where needed. If you’re writing without plagiarizing, there’s no need to mention it.

I, however, like to mention. Why? It keeps you more connected and networked between other bloggers.

Hey Christian,

Awesome post :)

When I was in high school, I usually got the most ideas when I was travelling from one class to another. Same thing with college – get the ideas when I commute and travel between classes.

I usually have my blogging journal, so that I can write them down and maybe even break the idea into one or two articles.

I usually get my most and best ideas when I am actually thinking about something else. I will suddenly get a spark – an insight, a connection between what I was thinking and blogging and write about that.

Anyways, thanks for sharing your experience,

what do you use for your blogging journal? Is it just a standard spiral notebook, or more like a bound journal? I always love hearing about what others use to write in.

I love time between classes. Usually I just pull out my netbook or laptop, answer some emails, and relax. It’s a great time to get caught up on twitter, facebook too; while receiving some thoughts and ideas for the things you’re working on that day.

what did you study in school? Something fun and exciting I hope?! I assume you were a great student. At least, that’s the feeling I get from you when we’re chatting!

have a wonderful day Jeevan,

I used my school agenda/dairy as my blogging journal (I will usually remember all my homework, so I didn’t really use my Agenda).

Yes, of course :) I used to do that last semester. I don’t much time this semester since most of my classes are together and end by 12 pm.

Well, all the required subjects to graduate :) Yes, of course, I was a great student. The best thing (which I was able to relate back to blogging) I learned from school was Psychology and Economics :)

So, yes, I used connect what I learned from my school to blogging. For instance: If I learned about persuasion techniques, I would write an article relating back to blogging about persuading readers to subscribe :D

You too,
