Happiness Doesn’t Depend Upon Who You Are or What You Have

by Christian Hollingsworth on December 2, 2011

in Personal Development

‎”Happiness doesn’t depend upon who are you or what you have. It depends solely upon what you think.” -Dale Carnegie

Happiness.

Do you have enough? Are you thirsting for more? Are there times in your life when you seem to grasp for happiness in all the wrong places? Have you ever been happy? Are you happy?

First and foremost, I believe more lasting and important than happiness is joy.

Joy is the pinnacle on the happiness spectrum.

When I mention “happiness” I’m referring to the feeling of joy. I believe Dale Carnegie was doing the same.

Google defines happiness as the following:

Happiness is a state of well-being characterized by emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy.

So you might be asking, why is Christian rambling about happiness? Simply, I found the above quote by Dale Carnegie last night while reading and was touched. It really resonated with me in this certain time of my life – and I benefited.

I only want to share.

Take Happiness & Work with it!

I think back on my life and all the times I’ve been sad. In many cases, it’s been a choice. I chose to be sad or influenced by my circumstances. I let the circumstances, of which I thought were cruel or wrong in my life, affect the way I felt.

If I look at happiness in such a removed sense, I find that it’s easier to see the power of choice.

We choose our level (state of joy) of happiness in life, independent of what’s happening around us. The vehicle might be sputtering, but we choose to be happy. Lost the keys? Happy. Are we ill? Yes, but choosing to be happy.

You may have noticed that I mentioned “working with happiness” above. That’s important.

If choosing to be happy hasn’t been a habit you’ve developed in your life, it’s going to take ample work to do so. The state of our mental positivity may be one of the most important talents we ever develop in our life, as many aspects of success stem from said talent.

Such a power will take work to cultivate.

What’s Your Happy?

I don’t believe I can tell or teach you how to be happy.

At least, not easily.

Happiness is different for each person. Or the process by achieving such a state of personal contentment. We spend our lives searching for this holy grail, while some find it and others don’t.

I feel, however, that if we take the advice of Dale Carnegie and make happiness a choice of thought…

…the simplicity of the emotion will work its magic in our lives on a deeper, more profound level.

Let’s think. Happiness.

Are we over-complicating happiness in our cultures and society? Do we take the time to enjoy the “little” things in life? How often do we rush about a day, to realize we never actually experienced any happiness and joy? Can and will it be fixed? Do we have a problem?

Christian,

I believe this whole post could be summed up in these two words: “We choose…
Truly we have the end say. We get to decide how we will view things (tragedies aside).
I can give an example: We are driving and get a flat tire. Instead of cursing and attaching to the idea that this “only happens to me”, instead, I tell my boy I’m going to need his help changing a tire. He’s 7. Think that might have made him smile ear to ear? Oh yeah.

So much of life is what we make of it.

My friend, you encourage people so much. That is a win/win. That is a good choice. Very intentional.

That story you share brings a tear to my eye, Rob. Taking a situation that could quickly be negative – into a lasting memory for your son. Gorgeous. Inspiring. All the above.

It goes to show that when you have good, positive intentions – the world is at your fingertips. We have that limitless ability to brighten lives and share.

And thank YOU for sharing something so wonderful. Thank you.

Do you think you’ve “happened” upon that happiness yet in your life? Is it lasting for what you’ve found works for you?

That indeed is so true Christian!

I guess we need to just let-go of ourselves and happiness softly comes and sits on our shoulder. More you think about it or try getting it, the farther it goes away from you.

Thanks for the great reminder though :) And I love the gravatar with the Christmas cap on- sure reminder that this months all about the holidays coming on :)

I have tears in my eyes reading this beautiful post and the equally beautiful responses from your other readers. I find happiness in my family life with my husband and 4 children. Recently, we’ve reached out to a wounded soldiers hospital and my entire family (especially my 8 year old daughter) have busied ourselves making cards and homemade messages for them. I know this will bring happiness to the wounded, but I can’t describe how much joy and happiness this exercise has brought to my entire family (even the sullen teenagers).

Thank you for brightening my day and thank you to the readers who responded before me. You all made my heart fill with joy.

What I really love about what you’re doing with your family is that you’re illustrating a simple truth….when you serve OTHERS you find happiness.

I don’t know why -but it just works every single time.

Thank you for sharing Samantha. I’d love to meet your family someday. You all sound and do things that are delightful.

Hi Christian,

Thank you for this post. It is a good personal reminder for me to stay positive and happiness is a state of mind! Sometimes, we just get caught up in so many things and can’t help feeling grumpy about all the things that don’t go well in life. I would try to find the silver lining in every cloud now. We can choose to spend each day happily or let each day pass filled with negativity. Sometimes, thinking positively is about practice – to be optimistic about the challenges life presents upon us.

I certainly need practice in staying positive. There are just certain things that can quickly get me into a negative mood. And sometimes those things just last, and last, and last.

But when you’re happy and outgoing – life brings with it so much joy!

I needed to see this “I let the circumstances, of which I thought were cruel or wrong in my life, effect the way I felt.” Christian, often I feel that life’s circumstances are more than one can bear. But my faith that there is a reason I must travel this road prevails. Post such as this (yours) give me courage.

Thank you Christian, for sharing, you are very true and sincere in your thoughts. Cd

Hi Christian, I always think that happiness is a part of any successful job, happiness may turn a normal thing to a big thing.

Here is a quote that i would love to share:
“The good life, as I conceive it, is a happy life. I do not mean that if you are good you will be happy; I mean that if you are happy you will be good.” – Bertrand Russell.

This is my first visit to your blog and i really like it. btw, you have really good voice :D

Happiness is a choice. That is all too often lost when we think or speak of it. Everyone has crap in their life. How we choose to react to the things that are rough defines who we are and our likelihood of happiness.

Hey Christian, weren’t we going to do something together? Didn’t I fill out something? Did we let that go by the wayside or did I forget something?

Hi Christian,

So glad that I found you by way of Adrienne Smith and Jens Berget. You, Sir come highly recommended and certainly see why! What a great place you have here. It looks like I have a lot of digging to do to ;) So many great things to check out.

There’s a guy I know who has a great perspective on life. According to his thinking, you have the power to change your outlook from crappy to positive each and every day. Sure life sometimes gets in the way and you can’t always be perfectly happy, but according to him you almost always have that choice. He’s 102-years-old and keeps thinking like this.

So yes, happiness is a choice.

Man. 102 years old?! Wow! And I’m sure he’s had his share of problems, but just with his attitude – it’s given him a good outlook and longevity. I want that attitude.

Great example. Thank you.

Hello Christian like this very much.

As per me happiness is always resides in us we just need to realize it, feel it and than live it.

And thus on this basis I strongly believe that no thing in this world will able to make me sad or unhappy unless and untill I wish.

Interesting post.

I also love that quote from Dale Carnegie, but the part that intrigued me most about your article is Google defines happiness as…

Why is Google defining happiness?

Amazing.

Here is another quote for you:

“Be Happy, it’s one way of being wise.” I think that one is from Sidonie Gabrielle.

My personality is a mixture of analytic versus creative. I often love to get to the “core” of thoughts by defining them in the English language first. I don’t see much of a difference in using Google versus a dictionary.

So is your question, why I used that method of finding the definition? Or letting Google tell me what makes me happy? Because if that’s the case, that’s not what I was doing or the intention.

LOVE that quote you shared. Thank you Alan.
