10 Best Ways To Show Gratitude For Others

by Guest Blogger on November 9, 2011

in Personal Development

This post on showing gratitude for others was sent in and written by an anonymous guest poster. I never would have thought of some of these people to thank, and thought the post to be rather inspirational. When we give, we receive.

Expressing gratitude for others can be a perplexing and confusing predicament at times. You just cannot find the right words or the right way to express gratitude for others or what they may have done for you.

The person themselves may be difficult to approach due to their position or demeanor. Do not let fear or personal preferences prevent you from benefiting from the expression of gratitude for and to others.

1. Say thank you

Just say thanks. Like “I am Sorry” saying thank you may be difficult. Just say it. The result is up to the recipient. Say thank you to anyone an everyone that renders you even the least little service or assistance.

2. Send a card

Send a card. Cards may be trite or overused but send a simple card and write your own personal expression of gratitude on the card and sign the card. A signature makes the card personal and more meaningful.

3. Pick a gift

Pick out a special gift. You do not have to spend a fortune. Pick something that is meaningful to the person you want to express your gratitude to.

4. Thank the local police

Write a letter of gratitude to your local police department. Everyone hates cops is a too much expressed sentiment. Let your local police know that you appreciate their service and the risk they take.

5. Thank your firefighters

Write a letter to you local fire department. Thank your local fire department for their work and their willingness to subject themselves to danger to protect the rest of the community.

6. Write your emergency services

Call or write your local ambulance and rescue company. Thank them for their ever vigilant protection and speedy service. It has to be a traumatic job and they deserve gratitude.

7. Thank your doctor

Thank your doctor and the nurse in the doctor’s office for their work in protecting your health. We all hate going to the doctor because of the time and expense. Considering our lives and health are in the hands of these professionals a little gratitude could go a long way in changing a poor bedside manner into a more comfortable relationship.

8. Thank the cashier

Thank the cashier at your local supermarket or convenience store. Thank them for their smile or courteous and efficient service. Even if they are not efficient this little bit of appreciation may improve their consideration of how their work influences others.

9. Thank greeters

Thank the greeters at WalMart for their friendliness. Many of WalMart’s greeters are handicapped individuals. Thank them for their smiling face and make their day and yours.

10. Thank politicians

Thank your local political representative for their work. This may be the most trying and troubling “thank you” you ever expressed. Remember, these people are working in one of the most demanding and disheartening jobs that ever existed. A little thanks might just get you the ear of someone in a position to make a real difference in your community.

Gratitude and kindness really goes a long way. This is especially true when you have to deal to customer service on the phone. I’ve noticed that when speaking calmly and slowly and using the simple but powerful “Thank you’s” after my sentences, I was less likely to be put on hold and the other person on the end of the line is much more helpful.

This reminds me of a favorite quote of mine No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. We sometimes forget that living in respect to others is much more rewarding than living only for ourselves.

I like the # 1. Simple thank you is hard to tell but very touching to hear. Thanking others for doing such things inspires many to say that word to everybody. Hope you don’t mind if I say thank you to you Christian for an overwhelming blog post you shared to us!

Having lived in Japan for 20 years, somehow this seems very intuitive to me. In Japan we also say “I’m sorry” constantly, it is a part of the language preceding many pieces of communication. What I was hoping for was alternative ways to say thank you. I have noticed that some of my friends use very clever ways of saying thank you for RT’s and mentions on Twitter.

Any tips?

Such a touching article that do not feel shy in expressing truest gratitude with thanks in my mother tongue Punjabi “Meh Aapji Da Shukkar Guzaar Haan” [meaning; Meh=me, Aapji Da = yours', Shukkar = Thanks, Guzaar = Gratitude, Haan = am]

Translated as;
“Myself thank you from the bottom of my heart ”

Really appreciate all your thoughts here. I agree, let’s start a thank you movement!

Maybe we can begin by thanking people more often on our blog posts? When we’re out in about? What about starting by thanking those who are closest to us? Like our family members and friends?

I’m very grateful for this guest poster too. I appreciate their contribution to the world. Be grateful, thankful and fill the world with more!
