Nowadays we’re all looking for ways to stay motivated for longer periods of time to get the work we need to get done, actually done.

Sometimes we get side-tracked, other times we just get plain bored. There is plenty of distractions in the world today, so in order to combat the distractions it’s probably a good time to start thinking outside the box.

Within this article we’ll be covering 10 spectacular ways to stay motivated.

Pick out a relaxing place as your work-place

One of the most over-looked ways to stay motivated is to quite simply, pick out a relaxing place as your work-place.

In order to help relax and keep yourself motivated on the task at hand, it’s a good idea to make your work-place feel more like home. Bring pictures of your family from home, decorate your work-place in a style fitting to your personality, throw in a few random other quirks and you’re all set to stay motivated for longer!

Take small breaks to “de-stress”

No matter how much you love your work and how you would love to stay motivated, quite frankly everyone needs a break sometimes.

It’s a good idea to take small breaks to stretch, talk to friends, or do whatever you can away from your work to “de-stress” yourself and when you’re ready, get back to work and be even more motivated than you realized you could be!

Learn how to do some business networking

One of the best ways to stay motivated is to quite simply, learn how to better network the business of which you’re working for.

Whether you’re helping the business you’re working for, or your own personal business, you’re helping to expand the clientele the company in particular has and thus, make your job easier and more worthwhile by helping it grow to unseen heights and keeping you as an individual extra motivated.

Success motivates.

Ask for a raise

A very easy way to help keep yourself motivated is to ask for a raise. If you happen to be your boss, just splurge a bit more than you usually do. Make yourself realize how exciting it is to work harder and make more money. This alone should greatly improve your motivation to work.

If money is the sole focus of your life, you may want to consider priorities. The pursuit of money can and will be fleeting throughout life.

Read motivational articles in your area of expertise

One of the most over-looked ways to stay motivated is to read about what others are doing to stay motivated in your particular area of expertise.

There are plenty of articles out there on just about any subject, so it’s very likely that you will find some motivational pieces that will help inspire you to work even harder than you usually do!

Blog about your passion

“Passion rebuilds the world for the youth. It makes all things alive and significant.” -Ralph Waldo Emmerson

The most unique way you can stay motivated is to blog about your passion. About how much you enjoy working, what keeps you going, the friends you’ve made, the exciting factors of growing a business, and many other numerous exciting things about you and your work.

Learn how to work more efficiently

Everyone is always striving to cut down on their work-load.

This being the case, if you spend the time to actually learn how to work more efficiently rather than skimp on the details you can ultimately keep yourself less stressed and more motivated!

Get into a routine

Most people just try to get their work done at a certain time. Usually up until they “get off the clock” so to speak.

If you get into a routine of how you do your work or go about your daily business your day will go by much quicker, much more relaxing, and It will help you to stay much more motivated!

Pick up a hobby

In order to keep motivated, your life can’t all just be about work and no fun.

Pick up a hobby that fits your personality and enjoy yourself once in a while.

Whether that means picking up a sport, hanging out with friends on a certain given night, or maybe even just watching a movie marathon on TV, any little bit helps to keep you motivated.

Get proper sleep

No matter how hard you work if you don’t go to bed on time and wake up on time to give yourself just the right amount of sleep, your whole day will be stressful.

This is a big key in staying motivated because if you start off on the wrong foot, your whole day can go down-hill from there!

Keep it up!

These of course are just some of the many ways you can help to stay motivated in your every-day circumstance.

Sometimes the days may be tough but if you start implementing these and other motivational tips into your daily life you’ll never be worried about losing focus ever again!

Wow. You’ve got an intense schedule there. That can be rough. What do you do yourself to stay motivated? The thought and hope of the outcome of all your hard work? A hobby? I’m pretty sure like myself, your hobbies/work kinda blend together, don’t they? :)

Keep up the fantastic work, Eddie. The inspiration you give to me is reciprocated. Thank you for working hard and being involved with the blogging community.

Are you able to say who you work for, or are you freelance? That’s awesome to be involved in social media like that. I bet you’re really enjoying it. I love all the extra “arms” that are involved in social media.

Love your efforts and reasons for determination. Family should always be at the top of that list, and I commend you for that. Thank you for inspiring me, Eddie.

Hey Eddie, I hear ya. I have a full time job AND five children! Frequent small breaks ain’t gonna happen. However, I feel very strongly that to stay motivated, you need to make your needs a priority. I take one fairly long ‘break’ (okay, it’s at 6:30 in the morning) EVERY day to do my Ashtanga yoga practice. An hour and a half every morning, just for me, to focus, sweat and prepare myself for my day. Great tips Christian!

Christian, aloha. Great tips that you have included. To me, appreciation and gratitude go a long way in helping me stay motivated. When I look at my life and appreciate the various aspects of it, it inspires me to be more and to do more.

Christian, just think what people in other parts of the world would give to have the choice of the opportunities that are before us in any single day.

Recently I finished reading Seth Godin’s latest book “We Are All Weird.”

In it, he points out that if you have “choice,” you are rich. WOW! What a way to view life. That kicked my level of appreciation up many more notches.

Best wishes for a magnificent week ahead. Until next time, aloha. Janet

Appreciation and gratitude. You make a fantastic point there. Those are types of motivations that go deep into the soul, and produce a meaningful outcome. What an inspiration you are there, Janet.

I feel incredibly blessed to have what we have. I KNOW I’ve been blessed. Simply, I’ve had it easy compared to so many in this world. With the opportunities I’ve been given, the support, the strong family. I don’t deserve what I have.

The choices we have. Wow. That makes our lives rich. Powerful. Blessed. I might need to go post on personal blog some of the extra reasons I’m thankful today. You’ve mentioned a lot.

So many of these hit home. After fixing up the office area with better furniture and open space, I do focus more and am motivated to actually do some work. Occasional breaks are awesome – if you feel the urge to nap, taking a half hour to do so makes you ten times more productive after. And splurging just reminds you why you do what you do! Great tips! :)

Do you have pics of the new office space? Sounds delightful. The naps remind me of Einstein. He had his little “nap” couch, would take naps, and then he’d also take violin breaks to play his favorite instrument.

And look at what HE did.

My most spectacular way to stay motivated is to always, every single day, walk for at least an hour. I usually walk in a huge forest, and keep walking for a long time. It’s hard to explain how good this feels, and no matter how much work I’ve been doing or how much stress I’ve experienced, when I walk alone in the forest, everything goes away. I highly recommend it.

Taking proper sleep is really important, Unless you find your work very awkward and stressful. On my weekend I usually spend time with my friends and watch some good movies that’s really give me peace of satisfaction and of course motivates me to keep on working.

Hi Christian,

motivation and will power are closely related. However, I just found out that will power comes from the conscious part of the brain which means that will power will fade away sooner or later.

That’s why it’s critical to make small breaks to de-stress ourselves, as you note, and to enjoy our work more so that it’s looks more than fun than work.

I agree with Janet that appreciation and gratitude for what we already have are highly important as well.

Thanks for sharing your nuggets of advice.

Be blessed

So you’re saying willpower is something we create in our conscious, on purpose? That’s rather interesting. Do you have information on that subject? I’d love to read more about it.

I wonder, for example, when willpower and natural instinct converge. It seems like they both mix and intersect quite a bit also.

Hey Christian,

Before I do anything else, I have to tell you that I love the photo of you in Idaho! That’s priceless and I can tell you’re having a good time. Looks like the rain finally stopped.

Luckily for me as well, I don’t have problems being motivated. I wake up motivated and ready to go. I may loose focus from time to time but I just switch gears, go to something else and I’ll get back on track in no time at all. But motivation isn’t a problem.

Great tips though, taking those breaks I find very hard. I get on a roll and I just get lost! I’m getting better though! :-)

The rain has usually been stopping long enough to let me head out for a walk each day. I’m glad you enjoy the photo. It’s beautiful up here. We’re so close to Canada too!

You’re a grand example to so many people. I tend to be more like you. I just work and work. Stopping is the key I need to find. The problems I have are sometimes losing focus on a “sub project” for the day, and making sure I take those breaks. For me, I try and take a 5 min break every 25 minutes. To stretch. Grab a drink of water. Stop for a moment and think.

Don’t you sometimes feel like a runaway train?! lol

Christian,

What great motivation tips! I am ridiculously motivated that I sleep only about 4 to 5 hours a night. So, excited about life and what I do, that I am extremely energized. :) I should get more sleep…yes…and I would probably do so if I worked more efficiently like you wrote above! Imagine how much more productive I would be if did both! Hmmm….great article! :)

It’s so good to hear about folks such as yourself, who are so motivated about life, that they just keep on going. Sometimes I feel like the councilor in the Matrix when he’s talking to Neo. He talks about how he doesn’t like to sleep, because he spent the first 11 years of his life sleeping already.

Good advice. :)

“Success motivates.”

Yes, it most certainly does! I can’t tell you how many times during NaNoWriMo just getting into a routine of writing something every day and reaching the daily goal made a big difference in keeping the motivation going to reach the 50k.

I’m finding the same thing with my blog. The more I am getting into a routine and the more I see that routine getting success, the more motivated I am to keep going towards my goals.

Thanks for this great post!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts here. It seems like something like NaNoWriMo is something where you’d keep building up that steam, get excited with the story, and keep it going.

Obviously there will be down, off days, but that’s all part of the journey I would assume.

Wow…it has been a while since I’ve commented here!

How are you Christian?

I think motivation (just like inspiration) is a very unique state of spirit that happens to different people in different ways. Sometimes I find something highly motivational while some of my friends think it has nothing new or interesting to it. It’s always a matter of what strikes our fancy…

Thanks for the tip anyway, some of them work for me as well!

I think motivation and passion play a fine dance with one another. If you have passion for something, you tend to immediately find motivation to focus on it.

Great to see you here. I’m doing well. Spending the month of October in northern Idaho in a remote area, with a friend and his grandparents. They have horses, lots of land and live in a big cabin style home. It’s nice up here. Been posting photos on Flickr, which you’ll see at the bottom of this page! :)

Hope you’re doing well too. Enjoying the process of blogging I hope?!

One of the things that keeps me motivated is to have an office. When you work at home it is so easy to be distracted by the TV, laundry, cleaning. I finally got my office setup and i feel like i get so much more accomplished. I go in there at a certain time and don’t leave until a certain time. It really helps me focus on what i’m supposed to do for the day.
Also writing lists of what i need to do helps me keep on task

Every night before the new day I like to write down the things I need to get done. Top priorities and then schedule out the time. I like working it out that way.

As for an office, I so feel you. It’s easy to get distracted. Especially when you have family. Having an office definitely helps to remedy that. Puts you in a “business” thinking mind to get your work done.

Funny tip! Ask for a raise! LOL Yet this is certainly true even you’re the boss. Most people are working too hard to be successful. But most of them too forget to give themselves a break. They keep on working and working all the day long, even during weekends without considering their health, social activities, etc. Then one day they will suddenly realized that they are burnt out and become totally demotivated. Your list serves as a reminder that spending time to ourselves doesn’t mean we are lazy to do our works but also for us to stay motivated.

A great recap, Greg! Love it. You point on some great thoughts there. It’s not selfish to need some time to “get motivated” or care for yourself. We don’t all have to be live to work, but rather, work to live.

Seems the people I know who are balanced, are the ones who are also happiest and most joyful. And they’re successful not only in life, but in business too.

Reply

Greg October 20, 2011 at 6:06 pm

I think we need to treat ourselves as we treat others. If we can give them a gift or an incentive after doing something great or during special occasions, why can’t we do it also to ourselves. In that way, we can surely enjoy our lives! I agree with you that most people who have a balanced life are more happy than anybody else.

Great blog, Christian. Glad I found it! I’ve been looking for more ways to stay motivated myself, and my favorite (as you sort of mentioned already) is by exercising every day. It’s hard to explain to those who don’t make a habit of this, but it really does get your blood flowing, and makes your mood better as well. Love the other suggestions as well though! Too bad I can’t ask for a raise….

I have been blogging for over 7 years now. My motivation to write a blog post comes and goes. For the first few years, I wrote and posted a blog article at least twice a week. Then the ideas for my writing started not presenting themselves as often. At first I stressed out over it. Then I decided that no one was pressuring me to write that often but me. So I started writing less frequently. In the past year, especially since 2012 started, my creativity has picked up. This past week, I posted 2 articles and wrote 2 more that are waiting to be published over the next week. Thanks for sharing your ideas about motivation.

This is the 3rd time over the past 2 weeks that I have read one of your articles and wanted to post a comment. This is the first time that your blog let me post the comment. Don’t know what the problem was. It accepted my name, email and website information. It just wouldn’t let me write out the comment itself. I am surprised that it did this time.

And thank you for sharing your thoughts about blogging and motivation. Often, it’s a difficult path for all of us bloggers; as we’re our own motivator. the boss. The one in the charge. The man. the woman.

We need to work hard to be able to k now what’s best for our blog, and to have the motivation to do everything that we need to.

What tends to pull you out of your unmotivated ruts? What do you do to find inspiration to blog? Is it a specific person? Place?

would love to hear.
thanks Patricia,
