Twitter And Its Affair with Photos

by Christian Hollingsworth on August 23, 2011

Twitter just implemented a new photo gallery feature.

Per my current understanding it looks like the service automatically pulls photos from three separate websites. YFrog, Instagram & TwitPic. You also have the option of uploading your own photos to the new service.

My first impressions have been a few. A mixture of emotions.

The first thought that runs through my mind comes in the form of a plea, “Twitter, please, please don’t become just another social network. Don’t be Facebook. I love you just the way you are. Too many services might become distracting. If there’s anything you need from me, please let me know. I’m here for you.”

On the other hand, I’m a sucker for photos. I think they’re pretty stellar.

So, what do you think. Yay or nay?

Nay, I agree with you that the new feature looks pretty but why put them when you can use them through every other SN apps? Twitter became famous because of it’s simplicity and I hope it stays the same.

I sure hope it retains its simplicity too. I’d be pretty sad if it started to beef up all its features just to keep up. We like it, because it’s Twitter!

Twitter is definitely one of those companies that acquire smaller companies and put the tech to good use. Good Job guys.

Much like Google. You can look online (I think Wikipedia) for a list of Google acquisitions, and it’s phenomenal. They buy out small companies with good technology, and then throw the Google logo on the product.

Genius.

I feel out of the loop. What do you mean by this?

I think this is going to be an annoying feature… photos on facebook serve a much better purpose, but I see twitter as being used for a totally different type of social networking. Having my twitter account logged full of photos seems very annoying.

I certainly don’t want it to be “Logged” full of photos. That’s going to be awful. If they just keep the simple gallery in the sidebar as they have now – then it just might be okay. Otherwise – man, it’s going to get crowded fast.

I don’t *mind* the photos, but I don’t want Twitter to turn into another Facebook either. It was perfectly fine the way it was, and I think if it adds too many other features it will just get ruined like Myspace did!

Yes, I agree. Let’s keep it small, and simple. That’s why we #love Twitter so much!

Twitter shouldn’t do anything to become more complex, but do everything in their power to stay the way they are. On the other hand, I haven’t seen their affair with photos.. and I really don’t hope they’ll start adding games like Facebook and Google + have been doing, games ruins everything (although I love playing them) :)

My thought is: Yaynay. ; ) I’m a sucker for photos, too — but I’m also concerned about visual clutter. I guess time will tell…and mostly likely, my eyes will get used to seeing the galleries. Just one more thing to “gloss over” visually. ; )

True. Our eyes will adjust. The lens will close. The clutter lens, that is.

Undecided. Lets see where they take it. Too early to tell.

I think they need to just stop right where they have it now.

Hi, Christian. I checked Twitter out a few times, but haven’t really used it. I’m with you. It would be distracting to have to look at photos (not that I don’t love them). It’s the simplicity that makes Twitter different. And for now, I like that.

Same thoughts, Allyson. Simplicity is Twitter. I feel like social media is a very volatile market at the moment – because I get this great big hunch that things like Twitter are going to crumble away here shortly.

Christian, aloha. Until this post, I didn’t know about it. One of the things about twitter is its ease and speed. If they add too many more bells & whistles, it will bog people down rather than speed up their communications.

Also, I don’t want to spend my time looking at the photos and I don’t want my friends to be upset because I didn’t.

Until there is a compelling reason for otherwise, I vote Thumbs Down. Until later, aloha. Janet

Hey Christian,

I saw the feature too and was wondering whats the whole point besides sharing your photos. And then I saw people helping helping each other with technical difficulties by sharing screen shots. Makes it easier to do it on twitter because there might be others who might join in for learning. Quite an interesting feature… as long as people don’t start tagging each other for silly reasons (the facebook effect!)

oh yes, the Facebook tagging effect. Can get awful pretty fast, especially if a lot of your friends join in on the rioting. That’s a fast paced way to give yourself a headache.

Didn’t think about the screenshots. That’s pretty cool. Have you been helped in that way already too?

Photos are nice, can’t deny that. And i don’t think Twitter will ever become like any other social network, not as long as it keeps its “tweet” advantage. But who can say what will be in a couple of years? It might need to change to survive.

I sure hope it doesn’t need to change in order to survive. I seem to love it exactly the way it is. I just always have my fingers crossed it doesn’t try and “plump” itself up to be like the other social networks. I think it would get lost in that case amongst the hubbub!
