Interview with Suzanne Vara of Kherize5, Small Business Advertising

in Interviews

Suzanne Vara is the owner of Kherize5, a small business advertising and social media marketing agency. Her passion for helping small business owners is what drives her each and every day. Suzanne is also a die hard METS and JETS fan and can be found tweeting about a myriad of topics over at @SuzanneVara.

Who do you look up to?

I look up to women who are standing right next to the men in running companies, speaking engagements; the ones who “forget” there are gender biases and are making a difference each day. I also look up to some of the men in social media who are here to teach and share their knowledge.

How do you build blog traffic?

Pay attention to your surroundings and you will grow within yourself and also your audience.

Traffic  is built by having a strong presence on LinkedIn, Twitter, some forums as well as engaging within in the online community.

I find that the more active I am in reading, sharing comments on other blogs, the more engaged readers I bring over to the blog. Writing great content that is interesting, useful, sharable and consistent with the Kherize5 brand has played a big role in the building of the blog traffic.

What are some of your passions?

I love helping small businesses.

Bringing their dreams to life in the design of the logo, the marketing materials, the message, the website, in brick and mortars getting the shop set up, the happiness in their eyes and voice when they get the business up and running and they develop relationships with new customers.

Why do you enjoy blogging?

I enjoy blogging as it is an opportunity to give back to the clients to keep them in the know of what is going on as well as see a POV that they did not consider.

The research, the thought process as well as that little piece of me that goes into each article is what motivates me to blog and aim higher with each post so they resonate with the regular reader as well as new readers.

How can social media become more powerful?

Social media can be used in a more powerful way for many industries and individual businesses.

Each and every profile that a business has on one of the platforms is a means of advertising. When they wrap their arms around this notion that every single tweet, every single FB update or wherever they are updating that the mere fact that they are updating is an advertisement they are better suited to engage in social media. They are not focusing on their message as much and trying to get their products/services in front of people in a direct sales way. It is easier to engage when you are talking and not selling. However, the mere fact that you are talking is selling as people see you and learn what you do.

Offering help to people when they ask questions, sharing articles or examples of how others use social media, taking part in chats, checking in on people just to see how they are doing or for a big brand following up with people who reached out for some help or recently purchased for some feedback. Social media is not like traditional advertising where you publish your message only, the message in social media is what you do for the community.

How do you become a better blogger?

To be better in blogging, read, read and read some more.

Talk to people, comment on other blogs and get some conversations going. We learn so much from one another and it is not a one man team. It is shared throughout the entire online community as people want to share their thoughts but to those that are listening. Talking about other blogs in your blog, the spark for the inspiration to write the article, the comment that became a blog post. That is how to become a better blogger.

Pay attention to your surroundings and you will grow within yourself and also your audience.

How do you find happiness?

I find happiness from within, my friends/acquaintances and also my son.

He brings so much joy to my life with his wonderful personality. He is so full of life, energy, is so inquisitive, caring and loving that watching him and his quirkiness makes me so happy every single day. My other means of happiness is how I interact with people.

When others are happy and good things happen for them, I share their happiness as it shows how much we care.

Thanks! I’m happy you enjoy them. If everyone enjoys – then I’m happy to search out bloggers and keep them going. The next ream of questions will be slightly different and taken from a different angle – so it should be fun!

Wonderfully said.

Thanks Meg. It is really the way that I feel as we are not in the old school ways where the man is the big bad CEO and the woman is the admin assist. Women are standing right beside as CEO’s and are keeping the marketplace competitive.

I love the point that, “Social media is not like traditional advertising where you publish your message only, the message in social media is what you do for the community.”

It’s such a key to understanding how to use social media effectively and a key that most small businesses haven’t fully grasped.

Thanks Lindsay. I have spent many years in traditional advertising and what was always missing is the interaction with the consumers. Yes you were talking to them but now we are talking with them. Consumers do not always go ga-ga over a new laundry detergent and talk to the brand about it as we would do with celebrities however, there is the opportunity for brands to gain awareness of new products and have the window open for people to ask questions before they commit … and then give feedback of course.

Hi Suzanne and Christian,

thanks for putting this interview together.

I have deep insights into a company here in my country that is by no means prepared to the way marketing is done today. They have a homepage, but they’re not really present online because they make it about them and not, as you note, what they do for the community. And they’re not willing to learn.

It’s just like you put it: It’s easier to engage when you talk and when you don’t sell. I would add, if you also listen…

Great interview, I enjoyed it and learned a lot, for example that I should expand my presence on Linkedin.

Take care

I’ve only recently become more involved on LinkedIn, and I’m actually quite surprised by the community. It’s wonderful. Every time you update your profile a note goes out to your connections – and it’s amazing how many replies you’ll often receive in congratulations. It’s a powerful tool for sure.

I love how you can turn your profile into a brilliant resume downloadable by PDF too. It’s ingenious!

Suzanne: I’m new to this blog and around this community, but this was a very nice interview to read. ( :
I like what you said about building blog traffic. Having a strong presence is key to building your blog traffic. I have found that being everywhere is the best way to get noticed. It all starts by helping other people, and in return many will help you succeed. I lost sight of this, but I’m getting bck on track and things are looking up again.

Thanks again!

God bless,

It’s good to hear that William. I think we all lose sight of that simple truth sometimes – but all the better when we get back on track. It’s a rewarding, sweet experience.

And thank you for taking the time to comment! It looks and sounds like you’re getting a hold of that “helping” attitude already, and I’m excited to watch where it takes you.

A wonderful interview Christian, thanks for introducing Suzanne to us!

It was great to read about how to become a better blogger – pay attention to your surroundings. I think that’s a great key to have! It’s all too easy to get caught up in promoting yourself hard and fast, that you don’t realise what’s going on all around you.

Great read! :-)

Don’t we tend to do that in ALL areas of our lives? We start to find success in ourselves in a certain area – and then we gravitate towards that one spot, abandoning our other talents, joys, hobbies and even people. I know I’ve done it before!

Christian, aloha. Thx so much for introducing me to Suzanne through this intervew. A quick trip to her blog before commenting, tells me I will want to spend some time there–and often.

Suzanne, this statement of yours resonated with me:

“Pay attention to your surroundings and you will grow within yourself and also your audience.”

Suzanne, I believe the more present a person is in the Now and the more aware they are, the more they have to offer.

As I read through your answers to Christian’s question, the theme that is consistent is the you enjoy serving your clients, learning, giving to others and engaging. What a blessing it must be for your clients to have you guiding them through the various streams of social media.

Also, as Christian could tell you, I love that you find “happiness from within” because that is the basis for all happiness.

Suzanne, it’s been a pleasure meeting you and I look forward to “getting to know you . . .” over on your blog. Until next time, aloha. Janet
