Social Media Makes Waves in Radio Broadcasting

Jessica Northey of Finger Candy Media is making a big splash in the radio world in an effort to bring social media to the mainstream.

Today she joined nationally syndicated country music radio show “TONY & KRIS in the Morning” as an Online Correspondent and plans to strengthen the “Digital Daypart” for listeners and Country Music fans. This partnership will bring social media and digital content news to the forfront of an audience reaching millions of listeners.

How incredible, to see social media stand up strong and powerful – due to the efforts of social media stars like Jessica. In every blog post, Tweet or Facebook comment she shares – passion is evident. Powerful feelings are felt in every relationship she forms, because she understands the power that comes from social media.

Barriers are destroyed. Friendships created. Brands enlarged. Goodwill spread throughout.

That, to me, is the power of social media – and yet another reason we need to pay strong attention to the opportunities that surround us.

What opportunities are available to you?

Think of your current positions. Maybe you’re in leadership in some capacity? Maybe you have a large reach in a local club or community gathering?

Heed the opportunities given you to spread the social media message.

Teach your friends. Show them how to Tweet. Set up a Facebook fan page for a local restaurant.

You’ll soon find that opportunities to share your talents, profession and gifts are many. Don’t let them pass you by.

billboard 2 300x239 Social Media Makes Waves in Radio BroadcastingWhat should we learn from radio?

Radio is still a tremendous marketing asset.

It brings brands and entertainment to millions in a lively, intuitive fashion.

I’m so happy to see Jessica harness the power within radio’s capacity. Just think of the new jobs that will be created, products that will be sold and new people introduced to social media. We’re just going to see the tip of what this show is capable of in the next couple of months – and then we’ll be amazed even further, I believe.

What I believe we should learn from radio is that no message deserves a small audience. Every message deserves a large audience, with strong support & feedback from the community. Turn your blog into something worthy of promotion – whether that be radio, internet or otherwise.

You’ll find more of Jessica’s thoughts regarding her new position over at her blog here.

What are your thoughts on this grand piece of news? Do you already follow Jessica’s blog? Why do you believe radio to be valuable? When talking to clients, friends & family to you always use every opportunity given you to teach them about social media?

Radio is definitely here to stay. I tend to tune into AOL radio more often than not as they have lots of stations to pick from. Radio ads are also making a killing, just because they are both listened to, and seen if you have the browser open. It’s awesome that Jessica is spreading the social media message … just because there are so many clueless people in regards to the social media topic.

…wow, first question I had after reading that post was regarding – “bring social media to the mainstream”
I would say that few years ago, but now – I want to say that social media is the new mainstream. I need to check the stats regarding radio listeners/TV viewers vs. social media users.

Great points. I have to say that some of the radio stations, especially talk and younger demo targets have moved and merged to integrate social media to mainstream faster. I have worked in Country Music radio for so long that I forget we are sometimes a little bit slower at adapting. I am just happy to be able to work to bring these two worlds together and make some fun waves!

It’s an interesting topic. The debate of social media. It’s still untapped. Most of us who are tech savvy and knowledgeable about the online scope of marketing understand how social media works – but most people don’t.

Everyone, including my Grandma, might be using Facebook – but that doesn’t mean she’s being influenced in the way she needs to in order to buy products and be marketed towards by means of social media. In fact, she probably isn’t. She’s still influenced by TV and radio.

I still believe more people are influenced and moved by TV/Radio versus social media. Social media, I’d admit, is certainly powerful – but I don’t think it’s quite yet THE mainstream. Most people KNOW about social media, but are they really using it yet?

Any thoughts? I’d love to hear more!

What I see is a continuous movement to entertainment being more and more interactive.

TV production people generally don’t talk to digital people. I know. I am a TV person who added digital to my arsenal. When I would attend local digital conferences, there was NOT ONE TV person there. They are 2 distinct groups.

ITs once the groups learn each others language, techniques and tools that entertainment will be transformed forever.

Here’s another interesting fact I once read in a country music magazine. Country artists still use billboards and radio time heavily, because half of their potential “customers” still don’t have access to the internet. Isn’t that incredible?! You’d think most everyone has internet, but it’s simply not true.

you are right Christian. I think that we are seeing a lot more younger demos coming to country but it is very traditional and skews an older demographic that might not be so computer or internet savvy.
It’s ok though…we can all integrate at our own speed or even never if someone chooses.
I am happy with what I have found and blessed that you are in my life! xo

I just checked some stats: that 36% Americans have access to wireless internet and 28% do not have internet access, which means that approximately 72% have internet access (I got those information from http://www.ntia.doc.gov).

It means that world is changing, that our perception of TV/radio/internet is changing. Maybe we need to wait 20-30 years.

Can you even comrehend or imagine what will change in the next 20-30 years?! It’s going to be mind-boggling.

Thanks for pulling out those statistics. That helps a lot, with what I was talking about earlier. It makes sense. Many “country” fans are in the Midwest where I know from experience with friends and family – at times doesn’t always have the most internet access. I would assume most populous centers like LA, San Francisco, New York would surely have close to 100% internet access.

Another interesting occurrence is how many people are now using “internet” as their source of TV. I know many who don’t have a dish/cable connection at all – and only use a combination of Hulu and Netflix. Getting their TV and movie needs from those services.

I’m glad I could help :) btw.: did you know that ~80% Japaneses have internet access. And I think so far they are #1.
I think that people are using TV and radio a “little bit” different than 10 years ago: 10-15 years ago we were checking news by watching TV or listening to the radio and right now – internet.
Favorite shows/movies – exactly what you said Christian.

Christian -

Interesting article! When I first got Twitter, I only had about eight followers and most of my friends had no idea what it even WAS. Now almost everyone I know is on it and tweeting just about 24/7, it’s kind of hard to keep up with! Isn’t it amazing how fast that stuff happens? :)

Interesting article, Christian and Jessica!
My husband, a long timer with Country Music Radio as a former Program Director, now has a CM blog with country music album reviews. Also, he also is one of the TOP 3 shows with his Ultimate Twang Radio Show on http://www.ashevillefm.org/ultimate-twang
My point being, using his Twitter and Facebook accounts have made the difference with his radio program stats. No more just talking over the phone with fans, now he can tweet as he’s doing a LIVE show! He can see what his fans are saying in real time and offer them a nugget of what’s to come. One of their sponsors had an event coming up and I tweeted to the sponsor in our local city that my husband was on the air live if they wanted my husband Mike, to give a message over the air since they were sponsors. The sponsors was delighted and helped them out getting the word out on their function happening within hours, but all took place with in minutes over our Twitter accounts. Now my husband can talk and tweet at the same time! It connects him at that moment to real people in real time and not taking time off his show to do so like answering phone lines or losing callers.
As you can see, I think that’s pretty darn cool!
By the way, he’s website is: http://ultimatetwang.com/blog/
Thanks,
