Hi, I’m Jason! I’ve always had a knack to write about various topics that range from technology, food, electronics, and health. Not yet a freelance writer, I hope to improve and reach out to individuals who want to read about new and informative topics that may be interesting or educating for them.

You’ve been doing a lot of writing lately.

It could be for school or for your own novel. It’s been a full two weeks and guess what, you have only five full pages done.  Now, I am not here to judge, but that is pretty awful.  I know that you can do better than that.

I know that because there are some ways out there to boost your writing productivity and speed right this second.

No, you won’t have to sit at your desk all day and write till the task is finished.  Take it easy and incorporate these tips into your daily writing routine.

Plan what you write.

The first tip is to plan out what you want to write.

Creating a short outline of all the topics you want to be covered will let you remember everything that you want to write.  Now, you do not have an excuse that you “forgot” about that one idea.  That idea could have been your best yet.

The next step is an easy one.

Clean up your work area.

Clutter can distract you from writing and it will surprisingly increase your writing output.

Unplug your internet connection.

The next tip is a big one and involves the computer. Yes you can use it, but only use it to write.

Do not use it to check your e-mail or your Facebook every ten minutes.

I know for a fact you’ll get distracted and that one sentence can take twenty minutes to write.

Better yet, just unplug your internet connection from your computer, problem solved.

Give yourself a reward.

One last tip is to congratulate yourself and give yourself a reward for your hard work.  Let’s say that you finished half of the writing that needed to be done, awesome.

Now go take a break, go somewhere, take a walk, do anything to take your mind off writing for a little bit.

You do not want to feel overwhelmed, you want to come back refreshed and ready to write again.

Speed up your writing?

Now that you are more productive, are you feeling that you are not writing fast enough? Here are a few quick tips to speed up your writing.

One tip is to type faster.

Duh, but still it is a reminder. You can take five minutes and practice on any keyboard.  You’ll learn the location of the keys better so you will not have to look at them when typing.

The act of putting pen to paper encourages pause for thought, this in turn makes us think more deeply about life, which helps us regain our equilibrium.  -Norbet Platt

Next is to write in bursts.

If you have a great idea, write all of it down.  You’d be surprised at how much you’ll have done after a burst like that.

One last idea is to set a timer and you have to finish what you want to write in that time frame.

Now don’t go writing garbage, but pace yourself, it will work.

Go ahead. Write.

Hopefully now you have some good ideas to speed up your writing productivity and writing speed.

Remember to take baby steps because if you utilize all the tips I recommended, then you’ll probably never want to write again and we don’t want that.

Take your time and be creative. As always, good luck in your writing adventures.

I like to plan how much I am going to get done before I start. That way I’m not tempted to take too many breaks.

Planning has been a huge productivity booster for me.

That’s a great tip Graham. Plan, plan, plan – and you’ll find richer success. That’s a marvelous way of thinking.

If you’ve got that planning going, like you mentioned, you’ll force yourself to get done, work more proficiently – and then move onto doing something else during your day.

Unplug the net. I like that one. I fortunately have a poor connection at my warehouse, so I do this one a lot :)

That’s good, that’s good. We need the internet less than we use it – and I believe that will always be true. However great things come of the internet – we can’t let it take away the “real life” situations of life either.

And I don’t think it’s necesarily just the “internet” that causes the problems, but the content. The endless hours I see people spend on StumbleUpon, the endless hours sitting on Facebook, etc…They’re useful – but not so much that you’ve given up your life to browsing one website.

Thoughts?

I don’t plan much, other than the topic and maybe a headline. Then I use a software called Concentrate (for Mac). It’s like unplugging my internet connection, since I can stop any software and it won’t open for the time I have set to write. Usually I write for 50 minutes and then have a break. This software lets me know when it’s time for a break.

I should definitively be giving myself rewards more often :)

That sounds like a great piece of software, Jens. That’s really cool. I’ll have to look into seeing if they offer it on PC.

Hey,

I think on today’s generation the “unplug from the internet” things is a must. We are so wired and connected with our smartphones and laptops and tablet PCs that we almost never give ourselves a break from all this connection.

As for a personal opinion, I usually don’t have the problem of not writing enough or ending up with only “five full pages” in “two weeks” because I set myself to write everything that comes to my mind about the topic I am supposed to write and I usually even find myself writing 1000-2000 in a matter of minutes (yeah, right…more like half an hour).

What I do is I spend a really long time in the editing and re-writing phases. Sometimes I write some more, other times I cut a lot because it was just not the thing to talk about there. I usually spend four times more time in re-writing than in the writing itself. That gives me a bit more quantity while keeping quality (the thing I believe is fundamental).

Sorry for the long comment, best regards.

Today has been one of my most productive days and all I did was play. I spent an hour or two working in the morning, answering emails, etc….and then I spent a few hours outside swimming and reading.

Then, I came back for a bit and did some more work for a while and accomplished so much more. It’s just amazing what you can do when you spend some time taking a break.

I know what you’re talking about there Hugo. Sometimes you get those sparks of inspiration where you can write a thousand words – and then there are times when nothing comes. Writing is interesting.

Hugo Martins June 22, 2011 at 2:51 pm

I don’t know if that was the case but I believe that when nothing comes it is better to just take a break and “swim and read”.

You’re surely right in that regard! :D

But then comes the fact that writing brings me just as much joy too – and I could pretty much do it all day long if needed!

Jason,

Thanks for these awesome tips. I have a few of my own that I use to maximize my output. I would share them but then I might have to kill you. :-) No, but I agree with writing in bursts. When inspiration hits me I write and I do it immediately or I jot down the idea. That way as soon as I am free I can go to my captured idea and make something real out of it. Another good tip is stay up 24 hrs a day and you will write a lot more as well.

Type faster! lol!

I like the 24 hours per day tip. Seems like that’s what I’m always trying to accomplish, but then I notice quality downgrades like a beast! ;)

I would say the majority of the time I don’t write on my computer. I mean the final project is obviously typed up on it, but I write in a journal or on paper. I never open my email if I do. I make sure I am using Microsoft word so their are no temptations. Good tips. Nice guest post.

Hey Meg!

I love to write on a journal/notebook first, and then type up the post. It seems I can “think” better. Do you ever get that feeling too?

I am totally loving this post, but I have to admit that the first two points don’t really work for me. I plan my writing to a certain extent, but I also like to leave come flexibility because new ideas come up when I follow my own lead. Sometimes, I’ll type something that will give me a new idea. It’s not the most effective way to write, but I am most satisfied with my articles when I give myself leeway to go in different directions! Maybe it’s a personality thing. =)

As for unplugging the Internet — that’s a toughie because I need the Internet for my research. I can’t even go to the library because everything’s in Spanish here. For me, the underlying point is to build discipline, so that distractors aren’t coming into play. I’m no expert though! =)

My biggest takeaway from this post is the idea of giving myself a reward. I used to do that with exercise and I think it’ll really help with my writing too. A little chocolate if I get an article done! =) That’ll keep me focused! =)

I think we each have different writing personalities. And I think it depends on the day too (at least for me). Sometimes I’ll have something planned to write about, and sometimes not. It just really depends.

The ones that aren’t planned though, often come out best. Those are the ones that really show creativity, I feel. For me – I need a clean desk. It helps me to stay more focused, and it doesn’t bother me as much. Otherwise, I’ll be distracted by the dirty work environment.

Just don’t write too much – otherwise you’ll be giving yourself a chocolate addiction! Well, maybe you already have one anyway? ;)

So true, Christian! Being organized really puts me in the mood too and sometimes I use lavender scented candles. =P Too much? =)

Haha! =) How did you know about the chocolate addiction? =P

Unplugging the Internet is a biggie, TV too. There are many distractions that can come while you’re trying to write so you need to lock yourself away for and aviod distractions.

Yep it’s just like studying for school.

Yes, turning off that TV is so important. There’s just too much time wasted on the darn thing for so many families and households.

Studying for school. Love that!

Yes, yes, yes. Topics are so important. You need that direction to work towards – otherwise you’re going to scramble for the right things to write about. And that can be rather difficult!
