“Mom, stop teaching me about blogging!”

by Christian Hollingsworth on May 12, 2011

in Blogging

My local church congregation cleans its own church building. Last week, as I was cleaning a door jam, I was thinking back on my life and all the times I’ve had to clean. Bedrooms, home, cars, etc.

That’s when I started thinking about my Mother. Naturally. She’s the queen of cleaning. Dust bunnies scream in terror in mention of her name.

That’s when I was struck with a simply realization...

Without even knowing it she’s taught me about blogging my entire life. Literally.

dirtyroom Mom, stop teaching me about blogging!“Clean your room!”

Christian, clean up your room! When was the last time you picked up your clothes? Did I stutter, when I told you to pick everything up today?” screamed Mom. Well, actually, my Mother never screams. Correction there.

From the time we were toddlers until our “breakaway day,” we’ve been told to clean our rooms. I feel like this principle applies to blogging too.

You’ve got to get up and clean up that blog design! Remove all those 90′s hit counters and dancing graphics. They don’t exist any longer. Get out that broom and sweep out all the crud from under your bed. Or in this case, make sure you’re running a stable, current version of WordPress or existing blogging platform.

You don’t want the boogie monster (e.g. hackers) getting into your room.

“Christian. It’s important that you always treat women with respect.”

When a reader comes to your blog it’s much like going on that first date. First impressions are key.

This one was sure hammered into my mind over and over again. I’m a king at opening doors for the ladies. Thanks to my Mother’s training.

As bloggers we metaphorically “treat women with respect.” Except, in this case, women are our readers. When a reader comes to your blog it’s much like going on that first date. You’re sure the car is clean, you open doors on command, you speak with elegance to his/her mother and father. On our blogs we often do our best to treat comments and input with kindness, we thank, and we respect.

You never knew there was so many parallels, did you?!

noguns 225x300 Mom, stop teaching me about blogging!“Don’t drink or do drugs!”

We all know the harm that comes from drinking and drugs.

Mother made sure of that.

As bloggers we also know the harm that comes from blackhat SEO techniques, spamming and genuine disinterest in others. Any of the aforementioned items poison your blog and will quickly leave you with an everlasting hangover. I’d stay well away. Listen to mother.

“Chew food with your mouth closed.”

Each blog post is a session at the dinner table; and you want to be sure you’ve got no food flying!

I’m good at this one. You won’t catch me eating like a slob. I know better. Thanks to Mom.

Bloggers often eat with their mouth open. Posts are improperly formatted, links are hyper-linked incorrectly and spelling has gone awry. Have you ever visited a blog and asked yourself, “Do you think they even read their own blog post?”

I often iterate, and will do so again now, the importance of reading your blog post before pressing the publish button. You want to make sure you’re put together, ready, set & polished.

Each blog post is a session at the dinner table; and you want to be sure you’ve got no food flying!

laughing monks Mom, stop teaching me about blogging!“Have fun and make friends!”

I remember the part in the movie, The Sandlot, when Scotty’s mom is telling him to go out and enjoy the summer. Have some fun, get in a little bit of trouble (not too much) and make some friends.

That’s your mother’s “call of action” for you today. Get out into the blogosphere and make some friends. Lasting friendships and connections. Let others know you’re there for them and are willing to help in any way. Whether that help comes in the form of comments, thoughts, guest posts or thank you notes; be sure to do it.

Now – go thank your Mother for teaching you about blogging. She deserves it. What did your mother teach you about blogging?

While you’re out thanking your Mother and learning more about blogging, I’d keep the momentum going by checking out BlogcastFM. The most ridiculously cool podcast out there – interviewing bloggers and showing how it’s done in a wide range of ways. You can visit one of the founders, Srinivas, over at his blog; The Skool of Life.

Just found BlogcastFM a few weeks ago, and thought I’d share the love. Have a great week!

Christian,

This was a creative spin on blogging. I liked it a lot. What has my mother taught me about blogging?

“You are only as good as you think you are.” When I was a kid I always spoke poorly about myself in the activities I did. I lacked the confidence to trust in myself. Even when I got an A on a test I would say it was only because I read the material just before the test and I hadn’t mastered it. Now I intentionally focus on trusting myself to do what is right when I write and also when I try to inspire while blogging. Every post may not be 110% but they still come from the heart and will change someones life I believe it.

Do you think your congregation will clean up our church…..for free?

When posts come from the heart, I think it makes up for the ways we sometimes lack at times. Sounds like you’ve had a fantastic mother, who’s taught you to be positive and believe in yourself. When you have that positive influence; there’s no way to fail! :D

I’d recommend contacting the local scout troup attached to the nearest LDS congregation. I think they’d certainly be willing to help clean anything for a service project! I know we were excited to do so while I was in scouts!

I’m sure the local congregation would help – but I don’t know that we’d be able to fly all the way out there….might not be a good ROI. ;)

My mother taught me to concentrate on blogging and not on farmville. Cause she’s always on it and I find it unproductive. I sound like a bad son but it’s all good. :)

No, it’s all good. We can learn to take the good and bad qualities from everyone. And I agree; FarmVille sucks a lot of time from people. I’ve never understood why. There’s not much to that odd game!

It kills time. Some people play Farmville. Some write blogs. Others read blogs. Sometimes, it all boils down the same. [grin]

The first time I wanted to skip school, my mom hauled me into the bathroom and put a scrubber in my hands. “Clean the toilet,” she told me. “Because if you don’t go to school, you need a skill.” I was maybe 7. After about three hours of crying about how I had to get to school, she drove me.

That’s a wise mother. Loved that story Stan. You’ve carried that lesson with you for the rest of your life it seems.

And you’re right. We all waste our precious time in one way or another. We lose priorities quickly as humans.

LOL, my mom taught me to always wear clean underwear in case i was hit by a car and had to go to the hospital.
so i guesss that translates to always make sure you have good plugins running underneath wordpress? Have no idea.

Very clever post. i enjoyed it.

If you drink heavily before writing a blog post; it might turn out a bit wobbly. Improper H1 tags, a ton of bold and italic lettering and many more crazy things happening.

Blogcast FM really does produce some great stuff. So much incredible content coming from those dudes. It’s awesome!

My grandma used to feed me when I was little. And she instilled in me that I absolutely need to finish every last drop of food on the plate.

I’m not really sure what that translates too, and I can’t focus, because I’m distracted by Dino’s girlish beard.

Hey Christian, my mom must have known a thing or two about blogging, too, I guess. :) I think you’ve said something a lot of blogger think (and may even post) but you’ve said it in a way I’ve never seen it done before! Bravo, my friend! Your mom sounds like a wise woman.

It’s crucial to be on our A-Game when we’re blogging. Especially when we’ve made it serious. It’s amazing what SpellCheck is capable of! :) Thanks man!

Good analogies and mama always knows best.

It’s funny how many things in life can be brought over to your actions and manners in the blogosphere. My motto is treat people like I would want to be treated.

Good to see you Christian and I know you’ve been to my place at least once so my apologies for being late to check you out. I’m struggling with time management these days but I will figure it out. Good luck in your journey.

Thanks for stopping by Bill. I’ve stopped by your blog a few times, and certainly enjoy what I see over there. Treating people how you’d like to be treated. Certainly a great item to live by. Where do you think you first learned that method of living?

Reply

Bill Dorman May 14, 2011 at 4:45 am

Definitely from both my parents; they were very non-judgemental, non prejudicial (in the deep south when it always wasn’t the popular thing to be) and just respected other people and their property.

It is becoming more clear to me the deeper I get into this, but if you know me in the blogosphere you know me in real life. I’m absolutely one and the same.

hello christian
how are you?

i found the analogies used in this post quite interesting and thank god for mums lol!!

on a serious note:

it’s important to evaluate ones blog design and monitor ones blogging platform to ensure correct formats and impressive layouts
this as well as other things such as promoting a community, social interaction…. all contribute to creating a good impression to visitors on your site.

as for seo, i cant really comment on it because i have a little understanding about it.

also there’s no point rushing to publish a post without making the neccessary corection because it justs highlights incompetence.

finally,

social interaction, networking all contribute to the life of the blog.
take care of yourself and enjoy the rest of the day

Thank you for your great thoughts. It’s true; you’ve really got to monitor your blog for changes and development in order to be on-top and in the running. There are so many blogs out there; you really can’t afford not to.

The blood of your blog is social media and networking. Great thought.

Great job; this is the kind of post I like, taking something from life and applying it to blogging. I always have thought that we never really know what we’ve learned from our parents until we’re doing something later in life and suddenly realize that the reason we do it is because we learned something from our parents that we thought was just them being, well, them. lol

I think the blogging lesson she taught me was “Get off that sofa and do some work” Being consistent and regular at blogging is just as important. Being lazy works like a charm when you don’ want readers. They will probably just get bored seeing your old post (lying on the sofa for ages) and will then probably stop coming altogether!

Now I’m a little irritated because this is a really neat blog, you’re an interesting story teller, and I didn’t know about you. Somehow, that seems a little unfair.

Anyway, like the layout and design, and the fact that you can draw correlations from life (or rather, from your mother) that keep me guessing as to the content that will follow. (Like the “Chew Food With Your Mouth Closed” part, where I stopped and wondered… Is this like Open Mouth Insert Foot? Cause I do that a lot. o_o I hope he’s not going to yell at me… …. And that wasn’t even it!!!!) <— In essence, I'm impressed that you're not at all predictable, which makes for a more enjoyable read.

Hope you don't mind, but I feel the need to RSS you. =] So I can stop by and read some more.
