Ever wondered how to change your life? Have you ever encountered an experience in your life that brought change?
Has a miracle ever graced your presence? Do you ever take the time to look into a night sky and become witness to the marvelous drama that unfolds in our universe? Are you a part of that drama? Do you feel connected?
What about the negative aspects of your life? Do you often wonder why you struggle? Are there times when the difficulties seem unclimbable? How often do you look into the mirror and look back in disgust?
There are over six billion of us on this earth. We all bleed red. We all breathe. We all witness pain. We all experience joy.
What makes you any different?
The simple face is: You’re not.
Identify The Positive In Your Life
Parts of our lives are simply perfect.
Maybe your perfection lies in beauty. You’re one of those people who walks into a store and everyone stops cold. You’re a walking piece of art, and everyone knows it.
Perhaps you’re brilliant. Acquiring languages comes natural and math was never difficult. You gobble up books like they’re going out of style and an encyclopedic fact is always waiting to be unleashed from the tip of your tongue. You’re a walking dictionary.
For some, their natural perfection comes in a less fancy package. Personality. There are those who have a glow through their intense kindness for others. I know a few of these people. One, I’d particularly like to highlight, is my Grandmother. She’s tenderhearted. I’ve never heard her raise her voice. And individual who is saddened by any form of hurt, pain or neglect. She simply loves others.
It’s time to find the positives in your life. Now comes the work…
- Take out a piece of paper and writing utensil.
- Write down a list of your strengths.
Where are you strong? In what areas are you complimented?
You should have a lengthy list. We all have strengths. Don’t stop until you have a glowing review.
Identify The Negative In Your Life
Now that you’ve identified the positive – it’s time to find the negative. Get out that paper again. I know it’s archaic, but writing is good for you. I promise.
What do you want to change? What needs work? Where are you struggling?
- Maybe you want a better paying job?
- Are your relationships suffering?
- Do you want more time with family?
The list, once produced – is often depressing. Something that eats at our core.
The key is that we don’t want to focus on this list. We want to purge it. Much like email spam – we want to delete it, and never think about it ever again.
How To Change Your Life…Like Pacman
This is where life gets fun.
Remember the video game Pacman? Pacman had an insatiable hunger. He loved gobbling up ghosts and ridding his virtual world of their vile stink.
Think of your strengths like Pacman – and the parts in your life you’d like to change as the item to be eaten. We want to rid ourselves of the evil that poisons our lives.
For every good thing in this life there is always a negative. What you want to do is bring more positive into your life so that the negative quickly disappears. Give yourself the tools you need to battle the difficulty that seems to always press hard upon all that you do.
Real Life Examples
The above concept may be difficult to comprehend, so I’d like to give you a feel real-life examples.
- Bob works at a consulting firm as an accountant. He’s very unhappy. He’s been working at this firm for over five years and is overworked and underpaid. His family life is suffering due to the recent workload increase. Bob wants to change his current employment. After working through the negative and positive aspects of his life he realizes he’s always had a strong love for photography. It’s a gift, as others have often told him. Over the next few months he begins to build up a portfolio of photos on the side, and works hard to get them published in local magazines and newspapers. To supplement his income he offers stock photography for a nominal fee online to web developers and freelance recruiters. He begins to succeed because his work is fantastic, and his drive is even better.
- Susan is suffering from poor health. She’s quickly become overweight and stressed. After going through her positive and negative lists she decides to make a change. One of her strengths is her love of books. Literature. The written word. Anything. She begins to download podcasts related to some of her favorite topics, and listens to them in the morning. All while peddling her stationary exercise bike. She’s made a change, and is being rewarded.
Now you may say: “That’s all fun and dandy, but this is real life!”
My response to you is the following: It can and will surely happen; dependent on your will and can-do attitude.
The Power Of Choice
“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.” - Aristotle
We all go through life with a choice. The choices at times may seem simple – and many times crucial.
- We choose to wake up. If we didn’t wake up – we wouldn’t be holding a job.
- We choose to brush our teeth. If we didn’t…gross.
- We choose to be resilient in times of difficulty, because we’d be crushed otherwise.
Why is it that every night, no matter how tired we may be, we always choose to brush our teeth before going to bed?
This principle may be applied to other areas of our life. If we simply choose to accomplish a task, no matter how difficult it may seem – it will happen. Trust me.
How Will You Change Your Life?
“A lot of people get impatient with the pace of change.” - James Levine
The question remains: Can you do it? Will you do it?
After reviewing your lists of positive qualities and negative qualities you may feel discouraged. Remember that this is natural. It’s all part of the process.
The important part now is whether you’ll create within yourself enough desire and strength to gobble up the negative with the positive. Here are a few tools to help you along the way.
- Use your friends and family as support. They will guide you.
- Determine a greater power. It will bring peace.
- Focus on the positive. Stay far from the negative.
- Mention your goals mentally and out-loud each day. Visualization is powerful.
- Appreciate the little things. A warm hug. Smiling. Movement towards success.
Life will forever throw at us difficulty. It’s the nature of the game. What we do with that difficulty, however, remains our choice. Each person chooses exactly how he/she will react.
This coming week I have a few areas I’d like to change in my life. Some of which include:
- Stricter sleeping schedule
- More time with family and friends
- Increased focus while online

"You’re such a smart boy!" were his first accolades heard. So, it’s no wonder that this phrase became the title of his business, Smart Boy Designs.

Christian,
This is one of your very best writings (imho). It will help anyone who is actively desiring to make a change.
@ ‘Much like email spam – we want to delete it, and never think about it ever again.’ That is pure genius. Everyone needs to have that permeate their being. We cannot change yesterday. But, if we focus on today, we can change tomorrow.
You are living it LOUD!
