Spend 3 Hours Per Day On the Computer

Last week I talked about how I don’t blog on Sundays, and the benefits that gives me as a blogger.

Another habit I practice is only spending, at most, three hours per day on the computer. Although it was tricky in the beginning to accomplish, it still gives me plenty of time to do some of the following.

  • Answer emails
  • Reply to comments & comment on other blogs
  • Post new blog posts
  • Spend time on social media
  • Code/Develop for clients

I never want my life to solely be my experiences on the internet and computer. I want to know and spend time with the people who surround me. The outdoors should be my greatest playground. These are just some of the reasons – I’ve cut down my work time on the computer.

How Is It Accomplished?

I feel there have been a few ways to accomplish my goal of spending less then three hours per day on the computer.

  • Become Highly Focused – As soon as I turn my computer on, I shoot straight over to my email application. I answer emails that can be answered quickly, and get back to those that might take a longer response later. The key here is only opening one program at a time. Focus solely on answering emails – and move on. I also set time limits for myself – so that I don’t get sucked into doing one thing for a ridiculous period of time.
  • Turn the Computer Off - It’s easier for me to pop onto the computer throughout the day, and find I’ve wasted hours, just by leaving it on. After I’ve spent my three hours on the computer – I turn it off for the day.
  • Take Small Breaks – Every bit I get up, stretch and get a glass of water. It helps to keep my mind and body more focused on the task at hand – and keep myself from becoming sluggish.

Although working on the computer is my profession – three hours per day is good enough for me. This time doesn’t include the “off-computer” time I spend writing articles via notebook and pencil and other studious thinking.

I’ll keep you updated on any changes that might occur by practicing this method.

Three hours per day has been realistic for me, but I’m willing to play with the schedule for changes in results.

How much time do you spend on the computer each day? What works best for you? Where do you want to change?

Christian,
You write your articles in pencil and notebook first? Great day! I come up with headlines in my notebook but then go right into Notepad or Word. I’m a little hesitant about revealing how many hours I put in, because it’s more than the average bear. I’m learning as I go and I’m committed to making it happen no matter the hours. I definitely need to work on focusing my efforts toward the 20% that makes all the difference.
Live it LOUD!

Maybe it’s the way my mind/brain work, but sometimes it’s just darn difficult to formulate my thoughts solely through typing. It gets rough sometimes, to be perfectly honest. That’s why I switched over to pencil/paper to rough draft posts. It really feels a whole lot more natural to me.

Those hours will pay off big dividends in the end Rob. Your blog looks better and better every week.
