Blog Tip: How To Know If A Blog Is NoFollow or DoFollow

This tip was suggested by Pete Lavelle of Pure FX.

With the increasing use of plugins that add the “nofollow” tag to comment links, the wealth of link juice is spreading thinner.

The Problem

Many bloggers find the need to know where their blog comments will be rewarded – depending on either dofollow or nofollow links. The difference in link attributes is shown below:

<a href=”http://urlhere.com” rel=”nofollow”>Link Goes Here</a> -Example of a NoFollow link

<a href=”http://urlhere.com” rel=”external”>Link Goes Here</a> -Example of a DoFollow link

The NoFollow attribute commands search engine bots to not follow the link, thus hoarding the back-link to whatever is linked to. The External command simply opens a new browser window, and allows the search engines to follow the link.

It’s difficult to know what attribute is applied to a blog’s comments, but the good news is that there is a solution.

The Solution

SEOmoz has produced and offers a very powerful free SEO toolbar for Firefox called mozBar.

An added benefit to the bar includes a little “Nofollows” button. When pressed, all links that are considered nofollow will be highlighted in red during your browsing experience.

It’s quick, fast & free. A simple way to know whether a blog uses nofollow or dofollow.

Some of the tools out there for nofollow are somewhat crummy, but this one is certainly the best. It works smooth, well; and it’s easy on the eyes.

Thanks so much for posting this. I knew that there was something like this for FF but I completely forgot the name.

Keep up the great work.

Sorry, ahead of time. I’m new to the marketing aspect of blogging. When I submit my info (link) and then post a comment, won’t I know whether I get a link from it by scrolling over my name and clicking on it? Thanks.

A link will be there, but depending on HTML tags included in the link tag; search engines either WILL or will NOT follow the link. If the “Nofollow” tag is included in the link tag – the search engine will not follow it, and thus that link becomes useless in increasing the backlink count to your blog. Hopefully this helps, Rob.

Do you know of the search command to search for do follow blogs. I am sure there is one but for the life of me I can’t remember it.

Appreciate anyone’s help!

They’ll be thousands of arguments about this topic but for me a link is still a link and it probably wouldn’t hurt to have one more back link out there..

In your example you show the nofollow tag replaced by external. I manually removed the nofollow tags, but there is no external tag to any links. They should still be dofollow, right? My blog uses the Blogger platform, so a lot of plug-ins aren’t compatible with it. I had to install Intense Debate in order to be able to use Comment Luv, but as far as I know, Keyword Luv is still not available for it.

Yes, it’s still DoFollow even if the external tag isn’t applied. All the external tag is, is another more appropriate approach to having the link open in a new window. Like target=_blank

Hope this helps.
