Higher. Farther. Faster.

Birds begin life pathetic and helpless.

Their mother must bring them food (already consumed mind you) – and regurgitate it. It’s not the most appealing of scenes.

Over time every bird musters up the courage to take that faithful leap and plunge from the nest. Eyes to the distance & talons gripping like death; they spread their wings and jump. Quickly and almost every time – they succeed. Beginning to fly. Higher. Farther. Faster.

We too are much like these little birds. Too often we’re timid and scared. We know much about a certain topic and want to start a simple blog – but something holds us back. For others it might be the fear of self. The fear of letting go and producing content that is unique, original & filled with our personality and love for life.

What holds you back?

My call to action for you today – is to find something in your life that holds you back. What might it be?

  • Lack of motivation?
  • Little support from family & friends?
  • Frightened by the transparency of the internet?
  • You want to be like others?
  • Your Mother tells you no?
  • Working two jobs?
  • Your blog topic has already been created?
  • Can’t find the right design?
  • Not finding joy in your current situation?
  • Donuts taste too good?
  • You don’t have a degree in English?
  • Scared of the unknown?
  • Not an “expert” in your niche?
  • Don’t know what you want from life?

Once you’ve found the items that hold you back; I have a favor to ask. Destroy them. Stomp them in the ground. Delete. Free yourself of all burdens that keep you from flying.

A quick story…

The story has been told time and time again of a man who incurred the following, dismal circumstances.

In 1832 he lost his job. He was defeated for legislature in the year 1832. In 1833, soon after, he failed in business. He was elected to legislature in 1834. His sweetheart (Ann Rutledge) died in 1835. A nervous breakdown plagued him in the year 1836. Defeated for Speaker of the House in 1838. In 1843 he was defeated for nomination in Congress. Finally elected to Congress in 1846. Lost renomination in 1848. Rejected for Land Officer in 1849. Defeated for Senate in 1854. Defeated for nomination for Vice-President in 1856. Again defeated for Senate in 1858.

Elected President of the United States in 1860.

Do you know this man? He was Abraham Lincoln.

Believe in the impossible, release & get to work. Write those posts you have saved as Drafts. Change up your writing style. Take a brisk walk for creative ideas. Give those wings a little room – and fly. Higher. Farther. Faster.

What holds your blog back from being its very best?

For myself it seems that I'm often too concerned about what other people think. It's detrimental, as it cramps writing style and personality. It's something I'm really trying to improve upon in all aspects of my life.

Agreed. In my little niche, there’s a column called Gal Secrets over on Live Journal . Its a small community that let’s post secrets similar to the original ‘Post Secrets’ Site. Except that these anons use it to bash and degrade newer bloggers and those who are considered authority.

What holds me back is the people of this community. I feel as if I’m not able to defend myself because that’s what they expect you to do.

Why has such a vicious circle developed within your particular niche? That’s so interesting. I guess fashion in general is highly competitive, back biting, etc…whatever niche of the industry you’re in.
