In the Lord of the Rings – Frodo Baggins took part in a close, friendly fellowship. They protected, promoted, and helped eachother in their greatest times of need.
This example, is exactly what I’d like to share – in developing followers and a brand on Twitter.
Gathering Your Fellowship
Although folks like Ashton Kutcher, CNN, and Oprah are surpassing the 1,000,000 follower count on Twitter – it’s important to remember that follower building doesn’t start at that level. Unless you have access to thousands of dollars, hundreds of billboards, and a primetime talk show – your efforts must start at a more humane, personal level.
In order to begin growing a Twitter profile & brand, it’s important to generate a following of close friends. Get to know your small gathering by name – and understand their lives, their hobbies, talents, jobs, etc. Much like Frodo grew close to his fellowship – you’re ultimately creating a tight-knit fellowship of people.
In my opinion, 1,000 followers who have a personal connection with you is more powerful then 10,000 strangers. I’ll explain why, in the next section.
Harnessing Your Fellowship
Creating a following of individuals on Twitter will reap incredible benefits if they have a close, personal connection with you. This is because your following will have greater reason to help promote your product/brand. They’re more likely to Retweet posts, tell others about you, and participate throughout your ventures.
In essence – they’ll become your “street team” in helping to bring your message to a wider audience.
From my own experience in developing multiple Twitter brands – I never cease to be amazed by how powerful friends can become. When tweets have been sent out, my closest followers have always been happy to spread the word and retweet the message I was promoting. This Twitter potency, through friendship – is priceless.
Conclusion
Throughout the Lord of the Rings trilogy – Frodo Baggins prevailed with the help of his fellowship. Gandalf, Merry, Pippin, Sam, Aragorn, Boromir, Gimli & Legolas – all took part in helping Frodo reach his goal.
Take the time throughout the next couple of months – and develop your fellowship. You’ll be surprised at how willing they are to help you accomplish your goals; whether that goal is increased blog visitors – or destroying a ring in the pits of Mordor.
Share with us ways you’ve developed your fellowship of Twitter followers!

"You’re such a smart boy!" were his first accolades heard. So, it’s no wonder that this phrase became the title of his business, Smart Boy Designs.
